Huanghe Tower On The Yangtze. Huanghe (yellow crane) Tower on top of Sheshan Hill by the Yangtze River at Wuchang, part of the metropolis of Wuhan, Hubei Province, was reconstructed, and opened to the public in June. The tower, popularly called Huanghelou, was said to be first built in the year 223 of the Three Kingdoms (220-280) preiod as a military watch tower and a command post. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the ensuing 1700 years. It was last reconstructed in 1870 of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) but was again burned down in 1884. Symmetrical in four sides, the newly completed Huanghe Tower was modelled after the Qing Dynasty structure, but built with modern materials and techniques. The 5-storeyed tower is 51 metres high, double the height of its immediate predecessor.
