Stone Sculptures In Southwest China County. Dazu county near Chongqing in Sichuan province is a famous "home of stone sculptures" of China. More than 50,000 stone statues are enshrined in 40 grottoes. After repairs in recent years, they have been restored to its lustre. The stone sculptures in Dazu date back to the later years of the Tang dynasty (618-907). much of them were produced in the Song dynasty (960-1279). These works are mostly Buddha images. People's life also finds expression in them. They amass in the Beishan Hill and the Baoding Hill. They are precious relics of the grotto art of China's later period and are of value to the study of the culture, art and religion of China.
