Glimpses Of Nujiang River Valley. The Nujiang River Valley in the northwest frontier of Yunnan Province is a multinational area. After more than 30 years construction, big changes have taken place there. One of China's big valleys it lies to the east of the snowclad Biluo Mountain which is over 4,000 metres above sea level and to the west of Gaoligong Mountain which is over 5,000 metres above sea level. Between the mountains is the billowing Nujiang River. Since ancient times, it is said that "goats can not walk in the valley and monkeys find it a maze."Even so, minority nationalities including Lisu, Nu and Drung nationalities live here. In the early period of liberation, they practiced slash-and-burn cultivation and led a miserable life. But today, it is quite different. The former valley has become a place easy of access. Numerous small towns dotted the previously desolate and barren hills. Scientific farming is now a common practice. Both banks of the Nujiang River are thriving. People of various nationalities are better off.
