A Well-Off Production Brigade In The Yangtze River Delta. Situated in the Yangyze River Dalta, the Ouqiao production brigade of Shazhou county, Jiangsu province, has developed diversified economy while doing a good job of grain production. The total output value of agriculture, industry and side-line occupations has reached 10.7 million yuan a year in four years running. The average output value of a person comes to 1,000 U.S. dollars. Per capita ration grain was 680 jin (340 Kilograms). The brigade attached great importance to improving peasants' material and cultural life on the basis of the development of production. In recent years, the brigade has appropriated one million yuan on housing construction with 23,400 square meters in floor space. Now half of its peasants have moved into the new houses. The production brigade has also practised free medical care and retiring system for the aged peasants. All the expenses of schooling for peasants' sons and daughters from primary school up to senior middle school, are covered by the production brigade.
