China Makes Progress In Research On Chinese Sturgeon. Under the protection of Chinese scientific workers. Chinese sturgeon, a precious species in the world, has propagated in the Yangtze River. Not long ago, a big amount of naturally propagated roes and 30 just incubated fries of the fish were collected for the first time in the river course of Yichang below the dam of the Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project. This proves that Chinese sturgeon can accustom itself to the natural conditions of the Yangtze and propagate on the middle reaches of the river even though the big dam was built. Chinese sturgeon is a kind of highly economic fish in the Yangtze River. It lives at sea in normal times. After becoming mature, it swims for more than 3,000 kilometers to the upper reaches of the Yangtze for propagation. The fish has a large body, the biggest weighing over 500 kilogrammes. The meat is delicious and the rees can be processed as caviare. It is of value for academic research because it retains some features of promitive fish. China attaches much importance to the research on Chinese sturgeon. Every year a big number of scientific and technical workers go to the Yangtze areas to study the fish. They have mastered a set of techniques relating to the artificial propagation of the fish and the breeding of fries. In recent years, they have carried out the researches on the existence of Chinese sturgeon on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River after the construction of the Gezhouba Dam. All this has laid the foundation for the protection of Chinese sturgeon in future.
