Formerly it was called Xinping. In the first year (1004 A.D.) of the reign of Emperor Jingde of the Song Dynasty, it was renamed Jingdezhen. The ceramic industry of this historical city dates back to the 6th century A.D. In the past 1,000 years its kilns have never suspended production. There exist many remains of kilns of various dynasties in the city and its outlying areas. Among them, the site of the ancient kiln of Hutian is most famous. The ceramic industry in Jingdezhen entered the period of great prosperity in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.). With the increasing of their economic strength, the owners of ceramic enterprises and kilns built luxury houses as a manifestation of their richness. Now a lot of buildings of the middle and late period of the Ming Dynasty such as civilian residences, stores, ancestral temples, alley gates, streets and gateways can be found in the city. They are of scientific value to the study of the historry of Chinese cities, the history of architecture and the living standards of the rich in the embryonic period of the capitalist relations of production.
