Shanghai Peasant Girl Gives Painting Exhibition. Among the 5.5 million peasants in the outlying areas of Shanghai, 24-year-old girl Kang Jinmei is the first peasant who has given an individual painting exhibition recently in Shanghai. The traditional Chinese paintings, oils and water-colors on display were selected from close to 2,000 pictures she had created. Kang Jinmei of Xiasha Village in Nanhui County started to learn painting when she was eight years old. After graduation from middle school, she continued to pursue her interest in art and improved her skill while she was a regular farm worker. In 1983 Kang joined a short-term training class on painting run by the arts and crafts research institute of Jiaotong University in Shanghai.
