Family Planning In East China County. The coastal Yongcheng county io Jiaodong Peninsula has controlled the population growth in a planned way. China now encourages couples to have only one child for each family. Through publicity and special considerations for one-child families, now 21, 200 young couples with one child, or 98.4% of the total number of young couples in the county, have made up their minds not to have another one. Family planning has been carried out in Yongcheng since 1958. The Chinese government called for two-child families in 1975. the county's 1975 population was 701,023 and the 1979 population was 706, 070, 5,037 babies were born in five years, thus the natural population growth rate stood at 7.6 per thousand lower than that of the country as a whole. During the 1950's, the county's population increased by 104, 500; during the 1960's, by 79,170; and during the 1970's, by only 19,170. Propaganda through various media and effective measures including financial awards have encouraged one-child families. They help to change the feudalist ideas that the more sons the parents have, the more fortunate they are, and bringing up more sons means good care to the parents when they become old.
