Ancient City In East China Experiences New Boom. Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui Province, is sandwiched between the Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers. It is called Hefei (the joining of the two Feis in Chinese) because the East and South Fei Rivers meet here. Hefei, with a history of over 2, 000 years, is an ancient city and has many historical relies. It is a key junction at the Yangtze-Huai Plain and a place contested by all strategists in history. Phenomenal changes have taken place in Hefei during the 30 years' socialist construction since liberation. The newly-built city proper, with an area of 50 square kilometers, is 10 times that of the old city and has a population of over 500,000. It has now become the political, economic and cultural centre of the province.
