China Makes Significant Progress In Research Of Human Interferon. China has succeeded in using genetic engineering to produce valuable human interferon in the laboratory. Professor Hou Yunde (left) of the Research Institute of Virology of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Center, and his assistants introduced the human interferon gene into colon bacilli, which afterwards produced large quantities of human interferon. The success of Hou Yunde's experiments demonstrates that China has reached a new level in genetic engineering research. Human interferon is a protein found in human white blood cells. It has many beneficial functions, including restraining virus reproduction, cells division and tumor growth, thus regarded by experts as one of the most promising anti-tumor medicines in the 1980s.
