Investigation Of Rare Birds On East China's Poyang Lake. A team of 11 ornithologists from the United States, Canada, Spain and Sweden led by Dr. George W. Archibald, president of the International Crane Foundation joined their counterparts in China to observe white cranes colonies on Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, east China, from January 10th to 22nd. They found not only 1,350 white cranes but also 1,165 white napped cranes, 105 hooded cranes and many other species of migratory birds like swans and pelicans that came to winter on the lake. Dr. G.W. Archibald and other foreign ornithologists came to China on the invitation of the Forest Ministry. China's largest fresh water lake of Poyang has become known as a "kingdom of rare birds" following the discovery of the world's largest white crane colony there in 1984 (totalling 840 cranes at that time).
