Silk Road Today And Yesterday. Kashi, the biggest city in southern Xinjiang, Shule, as it was called in ancient times, is an important station along the northern route of the Silk Road. In the 13th century, the Italian traveller Marco Polo noted the booming agriculture and economy there.
