Silk Road Today And Yesterday. Kashi, the biggest city in southern Xinjiang, Shule, as it was called in ancient times, is an important station along the northern route of the Silk Road. In the 13th century, the Italian traveller Marco Polo noted the booming agriculture and economy there. With a history of more than 1,000 years, the city is now a distributing centre of farm and livestock products and an economic and communication centre in southern Xinjiang. Photo by Wu Chunzhan
