Hydrotropic Greenhouse Built In Beijing. China's first hydrotropic greenhouse -- where vegetables are grown in water-soaked sponges -- has begun supplying Beijing's major hotels recently. In the five-meter-high greenhouse, vegetables are growing on four shelves, covering an area of 405 square meters. Over 20 varieties of vegetables including celery, romaine lettuce, cauliflower, chives, peas, turnip greens and cucumbers are planted in sponges soaked with nutrients and water. Temperature, humidity, light and fertilization are regulated by computer. The greenhouse is a project of the Great Wall Scientific Instrument Factory, which imported the equipment from Japan.
