China's First Test-Tube Calf. China's first test-tube propagated calf was born on January 26, 1983. Picture shows the one-month-old calf which weighs 72 kilograms, healthy and vigorous. The calf was bred from frozen ovum of a holstein cow imported from the Federal Republic of Germany. The ovum was generated for 285 days in the womb of the No. 977 cow at the No. 2 stock farm attached to the Dairy Products Mill of Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province before its birth. The calf weighed 46 kilograms at birth. The experiment was carried out under the guidance of the Animal Husbandry Institute under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Photo by Fang Ailing
