Shantou Special Economic Zone. The Longhu industrial district and the Zhuchi agricultural district, two main areas of the Shantou Special Economic Zone, Guangdong Province, were opened up at the end of 1981. The Longhu district now has 24 factories. Their major products are electric toys, carpets, garments, colour ceramics and foodstuffs. They are mainly exported to U.S., Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Hong Kong and Macao. The Zhuchi agricultural district has developed in an area of 200 hectares on the beach gardens, vegetable farms, rabbit farms, and aquatic farm, using imported capital and technology. The Shantou Special Economic Zone is one of the 4 special zones in China. It covers 52.6 square km. It has contracted 134 projects with overseas firms with a total investment of 1,390,000,000 Hong Kong dollars.
