Building New Socialist Countryside By Self-Reliance. The poor and lower-middle peasants of the Hsinwu people commune on the outskirts of Shanghai have transformed over 1,000 hectares of low-lying, water-logging land into fertile farmland through self-reliance and hard struggle. The per-hectare yield of grain in 1969 reached 7.5 tons and that of ginned cotton rose to 750 kilogrammes. Photo shows a scene of the commune's rich farmland.
