Portraits Of Zhang Aiping And Wu Xueqian. Zhang Aiping, Chinese State Councillor and concurrently Minister of National Defense of China. Zhang Aiping, 72, was born in Daxian County, Sichuan Province. He served as Divional Director of the Political Department of a Red Army unit in the Long March. During the War of Resistance Against Japan he was Commander of the Fourth Division of the New Fourth Army. He was Deputy Commander of the Central China Military Area Command during the War of Liberation. After the founding of New China, he became successively Commander of the Zhejiang Military Area Command and Chief of Staff of the East China Military Area Command and the Third Field Army, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army and concurrently Deputy Director of the National Defense Scientific Commission and Deputy Director of the National Defense Industrial Office, Deputy Chief of General Staff of the P.L.A. and concurrently Chairman of the Science and technology Commission for National Defense, Vice-Premier of the State Council and Deputy and Secretary Genereal of the Military Commission of the C.P.C.
